This resource is widely used within the business community but it is not recognized in the academic community. This resource involves people who are trained to teach specific courses for their respective business organizations. They regularly teach their cohorts. and help them understand the details of specific subjects or programs. This resource is I believe is underutilized in the academic community. People without degrees are generally not recognized as qualified teachers. Many of these people would be interested in becoming involved with the academic system of our country. They are however, not allowed to do so. Bringing the experience of the business environment into the classroom is important. This provides the opportunity to help students better understand how specific subjects play a part in society.

People who often train in the business environment often do not have any recognized degree that would qualify them to teach. This does not mean that they are not capable of teaching. Degrees are a wonderful thing and teachers who have them for their specific subjects are great for our schools. However, having a degree does not guarantee that an individual is capable of teaching to students in a classroom environment. Earning a degree does not provide the hands on experience of a teaching environment unless it is part of the program. Not having a degree should not automatically reject a person from being qualified to teach.

I feel there are many individuals in our society without degrees that have both the experience and capability to teach specific subjects. Many have been trained for certain subjects or have the experience through positions they have held. They should be given the chance to teach if they have the desire to do so. While there may be some programs to become certified as a teacher, I feel many do not offer the recognition for the experience and/or training an individual has acquired through work experience.

In summary I would like to make the statement again that having a degree does not automatically mean that you have the capability to teach a subject. You may have the knowledge but being able to put that knowledge to use in teaching others is an important factor in being a teacher. I would also like to add that not having a degree should not deter academic organizations from recognizing individuals that have the experience and/or capability to teach specific subjects. If individuals have the desire to teach and the capability, then they should be given the chance. Our academic community would be better in providing experience from our business environment and help to make a connection from the classroom to society.

Blocking of Votes on Amendments in Congress

The practice of legislatures both state and federal of blocking votes on amendments to bills before the House of Representatives or Senate is a practice that should make voters angry. The representatives or senators have the right to have their amendments placed before the full Senate or House of Representatives. Denying proposed amendments does not allow the process to work for all the constituents of the applicable senator or representative. Granted there are times when the submitting amendments to bills being generated are an attempt to water down the original proposed bill. This kind of action by any senator or representative does not serve their constituents best interest. They are there to make sure that the interest of their constituents and/or our country is best served.

The process of submitting amendments to proposed legislation should not have limits. This right as discussed above is where senators and representatives have a right to place an amendment to legislation that is being processed. This right includes the right of a vote by the entire legislative body to which they belong, not just a committee. The process should be specific and the rules followed for all proposed amendments. Denying actions by representatives and senators to propose amendments violates their rights and duties in their respective offices. Proposed amendments should not be rejected simply for the reason that the committee disagrees with the content. Within reason, amendments should be limited if it can be determined that the amendments are an attempt to water down the overall purpose of the original piece of legislation. This can be hard to determine in some cases. One example where amendments may be restricted is where they are intended to be applicable to only a specific segment of society such as the district to which the representative or senator is serving.

Senators and Representatives should only propose amendments to legislation that add value and/or is in the best interest of their constituents and our country. Any proposed amendments should be to add value and/or clarify vague conditions contained in the original. Many times when legislation is written subjects are not covered that are important to the content and success of the legislation. This, I believe, is the purpose of having amendments to legislation. Amendments should enhance legislation.

To summarize I would like to add that any senator or representative who proposes amendments to legislation should consider if they are adding value. They should not be an attempt to dilute the legislation. If amendments do not add value, then they do not deserve to be recognized. This statement is made without restriction to party affiliation. Amendments by any party should be reviewed on the basis of merit not because a party not in power does generate them. This is the only way a senator or a representative can truly serve the best interest of the public they serve.

Integrity of Senate Confirmation Hearings

Recently the nominee for the office of UN ambassador resigned after a year waiting for an up or down vote to be confirmed. Integrity of the Senate confirmation hearings, in my opinion, is lacking. The committee is only responsible for asking questions of nominees regarding his/her qualifications for the position and duties of the office. Once these questions are completed the Senate must forward the nomination for a vote by the full Senate accepting or rejecting the nominee for a specific position. All nominees should be treated fairly by the Senate in their confirmation hearings. It is not the responsibility of the committee to determine the acceptance or rejection of a nominee. This action is the responsibility of the full Senate. The example of where the UN ambassador nominee never reached the full senate for a vote shows a lack of integrity or at the least the perception of this critical principle.

In my understanding of the process the President nominates people to various positions which must be confirmed by the Senate. The latest situation with the resignation of Mr. Bolton for the position of UN ambassador shows that the process must be changed. It is fitting to have senators from both parties ask specific questions relating to the duties of the position for which they are nominated. However, that is all the committee should do. It should be up to the full senate not the committee to make a determination of acceptability. Every person nominated for a position for which the senate must hold confirmation hearings has a right to have an up or down vote. The current situation with the present process does not provide a method to make sure that an up or down vote by the full senate is generated. This must be changed.
An example of the way senate confirmation hearings should take place is the confirmation by the full senate of the new Secretary of Defense. The senate held confirmation hearings and asked questions relating to the position. After the hearings were concluded the nomination was presented to the full senate which confirmed the new Secretary of Defense. In the case of the UN ambassador this did not take place and should have. I feel that party politics played a role in the UN ambassador nomination not being submitted for an up or down vote. We lose qualified individuals in positions as a result of confirmation hearings that only ask questions and does not present the nominee for a full senate vote.

In summary the confirmation hearings that are presently held in the senate needs to establish integrity principles to make sure that an up or down vote is received by all nominees. If these are the present requirements of the process, then they need to be followed. Integrity in governmental proceedings such as the senate confirmation hearings is important and the public deserves to have their senators and representatives treat any of the nominees with the respect they deserve. Playing party politics, which is the perception I have is unacceptable. Every person who is nominated for an office needs to be assured that appropriate questions are asked relating to their position. Senators should not try to impose their views through questions regarding the requirements of the position. If a person is qualified to hold the position then they should be presented to the full senate for an up or down vote. It should not take months for this cycle to be completed. The hearings need to be held in an efficient manner. The more time spent on the process takes away focus on other issues. It also, I believe is a waste of taxpayer money in not conducting the hearings efficiently and timely. We constantly talk about cost efficiency in government yet time is wasted in the present senate confirmation hearing process

Integrity and Ethics on the Internet

Integrity on the Internet is a topic of wide discussion today. There are many sites on the Internet which have the qualities of integrity within them. However, there are many sites which do not. To have integrity within a site on the Internet the owner and/or webmaster must display certain qualities. The qualities discussed below are not all inclusive but are a sample of the type of characteristics that should be displayed. The characteristics discussed are only meant to be indications of integrity. The discussion is not meant to imply that sites without the characteristics below do not have integrity only that they should be more carefully examined. All sites should be reviewed for having integrity before you decide to use the information and/or services posted.

One of the most important things a sit must have is method of contacting the webmaster or owner. This aspect is important for communication between the site and the visitor (s). This method should be easy to find and easy to use. Sometimes a site has a broken link, a visitor needs more information or has a question about the information provided. Sometimes this involves or should involve validating the source of the information if it is not readily apparent. A site that has a method of contact wants to receive information from their visitors.

Visitors can aid the site owner/webmaster in maintaining the integrity of the data. This can be accomplished by asking questions if there appears to be errors in the information such as accuracy or completeness. Responses to visitors are important if a site is to maintain an appearance of integrity with evidence that they care about the accuracy and reliability of the information provided. Another characteristic is where information is posted but the webmaster or owner does not give the proper credit to the source. Sources of information should be properly identified. This can be an important factor if a visitor wants permission to use the material. The holder of the copyright must grant permission to use the material under the terms identified on the site or the site of the copyright holder. A link should be provided to the source of information if a visitor wishes to use it.

Proper credit must be given for posted information for a site to maintain its integrity, completeness, accuracy and reliability of the information. Giving credit is not enough. When I post articles of other writers, I provide the source and a link to contact them for additional information or questions. I have obtained permission to use other writer’s articles on my site and I have identified the source and a method of contact.

Another important factor is the collection of data collected by the webmaster or owner for tracking visitors and their information. The data collected and how it is used should be identified upfront to the visitor (s). I have a statement on my site that indicates the type of information that is collected and how the information is used. This will help to make the visitor more comfortable in visiting knowing the data that will be collected and how it will be used.

There are other characteristics which comprise the concept of integrity on the Internet. The discussion of the characteristics above is only an indication of how important integrity is when it applies to the Internet. Any owner of a site must assure that information posted is accurate, complete and reliable. The owner or source of the information must also be questioned or validated before posting. Checking sources before posting information will only increase the integrity perception of the site and the information.

Integrity in Organizations Handling Foster Care

The organizations which handle the placement of children in foster homes must perform their duties with integrity. The responsibilities of any organization public or private must take their responsibilities seriously. The children of our society are vulnerable and it is the duty of society to protect them. Foster care programs must have the resources to adequately protect the children under their jurisdiction.

The procedures in place must have detailed requirements for monitoring with requirements for verification of the care they are receiving. This means that when employees visit foster care homes or organizations, they must physically see the children for which the care is being monitored. There should also be regularly scheduled and unscheduled visits. Having unscheduled visits allows workers responsible for monitoring foster care being provided allows verification of what is actually taking place. Regularly scheduled visits may not provide the true situation of the care being provided. Children can have a clean appearance on regular scheduled visit but unannounced visits would provide verification of the real environment that foster care children are receiving.

Some of the conditions that public and private organizations must consider in placing children in foster care facilities are:

Is there adequate supervision available for the number of children already in the care of the home or organization being considered in which to place children?

Has there been a background check on the home or organization to validate the acceptability of the persons to be involved with the children in their care? There should be conditions identified upfront that will not support placement of children in the care of those who may harm them or not provide adequate care.

Are the facilities being considered for placement of children in the foster care program adequate to provide quality care?

Are the employees or owners of any home or facility evaluated for acceptable character traits the capability of providing quality care for any foster children that may be placed within their control?

Government facilities or entities must validate organizations being used to aid in the placement of children in foster care. The items to consider are:

Are their adequate resources in place for monitoring the level of children being considered or already under their jurisdiction to properly monitor the care being provided to the children?

Are the employees adequately trained in the methods required for monitoring the care of foster children?

Are there requirements to physically see the children when visits are accomplished?

Are their adequate evaluation criteria in place to validate organizations for the quality of care and monitoring of children in the foster care program?

Have procedures in place been reviewed for acceptability for organizations being used by government entities responsible for foster?

The process of placing children in foster care can be a time consuming process. The decision should not be taken lightly. Care must be exercised to assure that children are not placed in an environment which has the potential of not providing adequate quality of life conditions.

Integrity in the Performance of Parole Board Functions

The function of parole boards is a critical aspect in overseeing the process of releasing criminals from prison. This process must be accomplished with integrity and concern for the public which has been victimized by the criminals before the board. Everyone in prison has the right, within the boundaries established, to be heard before a parole board for possible release after a period of time. The parole board must take into account the details of the crime and the potential for harm to the public if a prisoner is released.

There are many crimes which have been so devastating to the victims that the criminals in prison should not be granted parole. However, it does not mean that they do not have the right to be considered for parole.

Parole boards must consider the possibilities of paroling individuals who may go out and commit the same type of crime or another and be back in prison. Parole boards must act with integrity and compassion when reviewing criminals for possible parole. When making a decision to parole an individual compassion for the victims of the crimes connected with the criminal before they should be involved in the decision. Many times the criminal is given priority in determining the granting of a parole without considering the victims of the crime.

These boards are not the only responsible organization within the criminal justice system. Judges, the court system and legislatures are involved in the process of making criminal pay for their crimes. Judges must set sentences within the boundaries of the law and legislatures must make sure that adequate laws are in place to require minimum sentences for specific types of crimes. Crimes that are devastating both to the victims and the communities in which they occurred should require that a minimum amount of time should be served.

Parole boards must look at the nature of the crime and the type of requirements imposed on the criminal before them in the determination to grant parole. Examples are those that commit crimes that have a devastating impact on the lives of their victims or their communities. One example is where fraud is committed against our older generation by taking their money with no real hope of increasing their investment. Another is where people are building homes but are not paying the subcontractors involved in the process.

In summary parole boards must apply compassion for the victims of crimes associated with the individual they are considering for parole. All criminals have a right to have a hearing for possible parole. However, judges and the legislatures, where applicable, must establish minimum sentences for specific crimes which have devastated their victims and their communities. Judges with options within the established laws must consider the element of compassion for the victims of a crime. Compassion is something that I feel has not been used within the current legal system in focusing on the victims. Integrity applies to this segment as the right decisions must be made with regard to criminal behavior and the impact on the victims. Victims need to be considered more when establishing sentences and the consideration of granting a parole.

Personal Integrity

Personal integrity in today’s environment is a trait that must increase. Individuals make up companies and the integrity of a company or organization is affected by the integrity or the lack of it in their employees. When we perform our assigned tasks we must do so with the intentions of doing the best job for which we are capable. This involves not only following the policies and procedures but assuring all our work and its content has integrity principles within it.

We as individuals in our job descriptions have tasks, duties and responsibilities. We must take these requirements seriously. The company or organization for which we work is dependant upon us for completing our assigned duties and responsibilities. The effort and the results of completing these requirements must be done with a quality effort. This involves not only the quality of the work but the content as well. It is imperative that any information that we generate must be complete, accurate and reliable. This also involves the tasks of being honest. If we create data or information that is not honest the decisions made from this data will be flawed based on incomplete or inaccurate information.

Performing less than our full potential causes inefficiency and increases cost. This in turn increases the cost of operation and may cause a rise in price for the product or services that are being provided. This in turn could cause a reduction in market share and thereby be a threat to the job we are occupying

Again we as individuals must look at our duties and responsibilities seriously. We must provide a high quality performance of our duties. The evidence of completing our assigned tasks must be accurate, complete and reliable. Decisions are made by management of companies and organizations based on our job performance. These decisions can affect the security of our position. This statement is made simply because if the quality of our job performance is lacking, it reflects upon the security of the organization and can be perceived by the public as lacking a quality product or service. We as individuals can help to project a positive image of the company we work for to the public. Providing a positive image through our work can help to gain respect in the public’s opinion of the products and services being produced. This has potential of increasing market share and thereby provides more security for the position we hold.

Integrity in Cancelling Interviews

Many times people schedule interviews and do not show up either in person or are not available when a call is made. There can be varying reasons for this to occur. However, when we establish an appointment for an interview, we must honor it or notify the organization with which the interview is scheduled. This commitment applies to interviews being conducted for jobs, interviews as an author or celebrity. The main focus needs to be to honor the commitment we have made. When we do not show up for an interview it places an unfavorable impression by others on our character. This is something that you do not want to take place.

Interviews can be a significant event dependant upon the purpose. If it is an interview for a job you must give a good impression by arriving for the interview as scheduled. This is the first impression an organization generates before the interview begins. Starting off on the right foot in an interview is important. When we do not show up for a scheduled interview for a job it impacts the schedule of the person conducting the interview. It causes a shift in the schedule and this is something that is remembered by companies when making decisions to hire employees. The key in this situation is to notify the person that is scheduled to conduct the interview as soon as possible if you are unable to make your appointed time. If you reason is valid most companies will not hold this against you and will be willing to reschedule the interview.

Interviews with radio or TV personalities are another matter. If you are an author and have interviews scheduled either in person or by telephone, it is important to be available at the appointed time. The worst thing to do is to not be available to answer the telephone to participate in the scheduled interview. This causes a scheduling problem with program time and will earn you a reputation that you do not want, especially if you are a beginning author and want good publicity for your books and articles.

In the world of TV and radio it is important to have contact ahead of time just prior to the scheduled interview. This is to assure that no mistakes are made and to verify that the interview time has not changed based on unforeseen circumstances. Sometimes this occurs with radio and TV hosts and issues arise that changes their program priorities. While this does not occur often, it is advisable to be aware of the possible changes in schedules. Personalities or their staff will usually contact you to verify to availability for the scheduled time. I had an interview with a local TV station and they called to confirm the appointed time the day before the interview.

Interviews with radio stations can be live or recorded based on the time the interview is scheduled and the location of the program and the person to be interviewed. Sometimes the times require that the interview be recorded as the time of the program was not conducive to a live participation. This occurred with an interview I had with a radio station in California. The time of the program was 11:00 P.M. California time and since I was in the Eastern Time zone the time would have been 2:00 A.M. Therefore the interview was recorded.

In summary it is important to contact the person conducting an interview for whatever reason if you are unavailable to make your commitment. Again emergencies do occur and people will normally understand when commitments need to be changed if you have a valid reason. This will help to achieve a positive image in the eyes of the interviewer and greatly enhance your perception as a person of integrity. It will also help your cause for the reason for which the interview was to be conducted. Remember to consider the impact on others when you must cancel an interview in any situation. You would want the same courtesy.

Integrity Responsibilities of an Author

Integrity in writing books or articles is a subject which must be engrained in everything a writer/author generates. It is important not only for an author’s reputation but also the perception that he/she is operating within the boundaries of integrity. When writing a book, the author must assure that he/she has all the required permissions involved in sources of information being used. This involves information which is copyrighted by other individuals, organizations or websites. When material is included in a book an author must make sure in his/her research that using information does not violate any copyright or guidelines in place from the source.

One exception to this is where the information is in the public domain. This condition must be verified however, before use and/or publication of any book or article. Information in the public domain can typically be used in a book environment. However, information at the source site must be reviewed for any guidelines/limitations in place. Sometimes even public information may have limitations and the guidelines must be followed to avoid violating any conditions for use. It is important to note that if there is a question on the requirements for use, the website should be contacted. Establishing written permission is a critical component to having documentation to validate the integrity in the collection and writing of any book. Getting verbal permission does not provide proof of permission, especially if there are any questions in the future.

Sometimes sites with information in the public or private domain freely allow the use of information within guidelines. An author must make sure using information involving any guidelines in place does not violate those conditions. In my book Integrity: Do You Have It? 2nd edition, ISBN 0741429160 I used both public and private information. In my book several sources of information was used. I contacted sources to obtain permission for use. This should always be done especially if there are any questions on permission guidelines. In one particular case I had to sign a contract. In other cases there were guidelines imposed on sites and when the information was used I made sure that the limits were not violated.

Writing an article is another aspect of being a writer/author. The content of an article must not violate the copyright rules if the information was previously posted. We as writers/authors must make sure that we do not violate copyright conditions and do not try to display information by other individuals as our own. This also involves plagiarism which involves taking an article by another individual and changing the words and exhibiting the information as your own.

One exception to the requirements above involves the fact that we as individuals and writers/authors are allowed to look at the content of an article and comment on the information and any conclusions made. We have a right to our express our opinion. This is true as long as what we say is complete and accurate. We cannot make statements that have not been validated to be true associated with any individual or organization.

In summary when a writer/author uses any information it must be a matter of principle to obtain written permission of another individual, organization or web site. This is especially true if it is unclear as to the need for obtaining permission. We also should not rewrite articles and pass on the information as our own. We are allowed to make comments on the information and/or conclusions on the information previously written. It is important in making comments that we do not make statements that are either untrue or have not be verified for accuracy and completeness. Integrity is an important subject and can destroy a writer/author’s career if it is determined that the principles of honesty, completeness and accuracy are not present in the content of any books and articles written.

Integrity in Book Sales Records

First I want to mention that I am happy with my present publisher and the communications that I have had with them. They have done everything they have promised in their publishing contract with me. They have worked with me when I present some marketing incentives and are available to supply guidance and input. This article deals with the inaccessibility of sales records between distributors and publishers. There are good publishers and there are not so good publishers. In the past I have made attempts to receive information regarding sales records of my previous book sales.

I have, in the past, collected data to show sales history of my books for comparison to publisher records. When making a comparison between my publisher at the time and my records I was told their records were correct and mine were in error. In one case in particular I validated through email the accuracy of the data on a particular site. I was told by my publisher that the company did not own their own site and the information on it. I attempted to obtain sales information from distributors to validate either my records or the records of my publisher. When I undertook this activity I found an interesting fact. I found contracts between publishers and distributors sometimes have restrictions on providing sales and printing information being given directly to authors. This condition must be changed. Authors who are the copyright holder and have not sold any rights are entitled to information on sales of their book (s).

Distributors must be allowed to provide information regarding the sales of books to the authors that wrote them. When full access to information is not allowed publishing contracts with distributors, I believe this is a violation of author rights as the copyright holder. Some answers I have received involved statements such as get the information from the publisher. Information provided from publishers must have method (s) available to validate the information they are providing. Without this verification we must trust the records and payments made by sometimes unscrupulous publishers.

Other statements I have received is that authors have more leverage when it comes to requesting information about their books. This may be true in some cases but if a contract signed between distributors and publishers which restrict free access of sales data, then this is wrong.

Those in government entities must look at this condition to make any necessary changes to laws affecting the release of information to people who own the rights to publications. Authors must free methods available to them so information can be validated. Contracts between publishers and distributors must be required by law to authorize the free access of information to sales data of their publications. This would in no way, I believe, violate conditions of doing business as authors have the right to this information. It is inconceivable that this data not is automatically available to authors with full control of the rights to their books.

In summary authors have a right to receive any sales data from publishers, booksellers and distributors so publisher records can be validated. I have had some success with some booksellers in the past but distributors are another matter. Applicable laws that are currently in place must be changed to require that this kind of data must be provided to authors who own the rights to the books they have written.

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity in our society is an important aspect. Those who are involved in the academic segment of our society whether it is as a student or teacher the integrity of the process must be protected. This protection can be critical to the future of society. Academic integrity affects our society in a way that many people do not realize. It can be found in news stories where integrity of academic institutions has been questioned.

The academic portion of society involves schools, training facilities and businesses at all levels. The integrity of the academic process must be protected to assure the completeness, accuracy and reliability of the information being taught. The information being used in subjects must provide all the details associated with the topic to assure that applicable data is included. Information which is applicable to the subject must be presented as part of the learning experience. Leaving out information affects the complete understanding of the subject by the participants. It also can or does affect how and what decisions are made in the future.

While not everything may be able to be included, the teacher/instructor must make sure there is no bias in the information presented. The bias can be from the school perspective or the instructor. Bias as far as conclusion or opinion does not belong in the classroom environment. Students must be presented the information and then decide for themselves their conclusions. all the aspects are referenced It also includes the qualifications of those giving the instruction. Rules for both students and instructors should be identified and strictly enforced. The rules discussed below are only examples of conditions which should be in place.

Another aspect involves the nature of respect. Respect for the instructor and respect for the participants. Those participants in a class who exhibit a lack of respect for the instructor affects the academic integrity of the class. This condition exists as it takes away the potential learning opportunities and becomes the focus rather than the content of the class being taught. Attention must be focused on absorbing and understanding what is being taught.

Another side of this condition involves the fact that teachers/instructors must earn the respect of the class participants. This can be accomplished partially by exhibiting a professional appearance by the way the class information is presented and the physically appearance of the instructor. If a person is not appropriately dressed for a classroom environment, then this aspect can take away attention of the students. If the students do not feel the instructor is being professional in conducting the class, then they may not give the attention to learning the information. If an instructor does not appear to be serious about teaching the information, the participants may not be as well.

The instructors presenting the information must be knowledgeable of the information being taught. Instructors teaching must have the qualifications to present the subject to class participants. This does not mean that all instructors must have teaching degrees. There are many classes taught in a business environment where people are selected to take classes and train others in their organization. It does not make them any less qualified to teach.

To summarize participants in a class must focus their attention on learning the information. They must also assure that their behavior is ethical and right and does not take the focus away from the subject being taught. The instructor must make sure all applicable data is presented in the subject to achieve integrity in the content. The information must be complete, accurate and reliable. To be less affects the understanding of the subject and the decisions that will be made in the future by the participants. This is especially true in the business environment. .

Integrity on the Internet

Integrity on the Internet is a topic of wide discussion today. There are many sites on the Internet which have the qualities of integrity within them. However, there are many sites which do not. To have integrity within a site on the Internet the owner and/or webmaster must display certain qualities. The qualities discussed below are not all inclusive but are a sample of the type of characteristics that should be displayed. The characteristics discussed are only meant to be indications of integrity which should be displayed. The discussion is not meant to imply that sites without the characteristics below do not have integrity only that they should be more carefully examined. All sites should be reviewed for having integrity but those that have the characteristics below may not need as close a review as others.

One of the most important things a sit must have is a way of making contact. It is important to provide visitors with a way of communicating. Sometimes a site has a broken link or a visitor needs more information or has a question on the information provided. This method of communication should be easily found and easy to use. A site that has a method of contact wants to receive information from their visitors. Visitors can aid the site owner/webmaster in maintaining the integrity of the data.

Information sources can sometimes be readily determined. Other times it cannot. Information posted which does not identify the source can result in the site being questioned as to the completeness, accuracy and reliability of the information and the site. Giving credit to the source is not enough. There should be a method of contacting them for whatever reason a visitor may need. When I post articles of other writers, I provide the source and a link to contact them for additional information or questions. I have obtained permission to use other writer’s articles on my site and I have identified the source and a method of contact.

Another important factor is where data is collected by the webmaster or owner for tracking visitors and their information. A site should have this identified upfront so any visitor knows the extent of the information collected and how it is used. I have a statement on my site that indicates the type of information that is collected and how the information is used. This will help to make the visitor more comfortable in visiting knowing the data that will be collected and how it will be used.

Another factor to maintain integrity is not posting information for which permission has not been granted by the copyright holder. Sometimes the information is in the public domain. This should be verified before posting. Other times the information is not within the public domain and there are requirements for using information of others. These conditions should not be violated. If questionable information is posted and the source is not readily identifiable, then this adds to the perception that the site lacks integrity.

Checking sources before posting information will only increase the integrity perception of site and the information.

Audit Integrity

Audit integrity is critical to the well-being of society and the records that are generated as a result of audits conducted. Those who conduct audits must do so with integrity principles engrained in their personal character. Auditors performing such audits as accounting, quality assurance or quality system to name a few must not have any preceived conclusions of the outcome. When conclusions are present whether they are fixed or perceived without verification, the process of the audit and the data collected can be affected. He/she must make sure that the focus is maintained during the audit to accomplish the intent established.

Audit integrity is a subject that should be important to all individuals. Audits that are conducted in various businesses affect decisions we must make as individuals involving our family, friends and our livelihood. Most of us have been involved at one point or another with audits that are conducted. All companies have some involvement with the audit process. They are either conducting an audit or they are being audited. Those of us that work must make sure that when we are involved in an audit, either conducting it or answering questions, we must do so honestly.

We must place ourselves in other individual’s position. Would we want audit results not properly identify the actual status of a company’s system or their products. The accuracy can be critical if we are making a decision to purchase stock, products or services. Therefore, we must make sure that our involvement has the characteristics of honesty, completeness and accuracy. There have been examples of audits conducted that did not produce or identify problems with company records. This inaccuracy or incompleteness affected hundreds of thousands of individuals.

We as individuals also conduct our own audits though we may not realize it. We check our phone bill, credit card statements and others for accuracy to make sure that we are not being charged for something that was not authorized. Let us make sure that any audits we conduct or with which we become involved that we do so honestly. If we are conducting an audit we must make sure that we get satisfactory answers to questions we ask and if we do not to keep asking until we receive a satisfactory response. If we are asked a question during an audit we must provide an answer that directly relates to the question. One point with providing answers in an audit environment is to only answer the question and not volunteer more information than what the question is asking for.

In summary audits that are conducted must be accurate, honest and complete both in the performance and the results. Auditors must satisfy the purpose of the audit and ask specific questions to collect data on which to make decisions. The data required must be complete, accurate and reliable to draw conclusions. Any decision made to determine compliance or noncompliance to applicable requirements must be based on all applicable data for the area being reviewed. All applicable contractual and system requirements must also be reviewed and validated to determine compliance. The individuals involved in answering questions of an auditor must answer the question with enough data to satisfy the conditions posed in the question. They should however, not volunteer any additional data that is not needed for the auditor to determine acceptance of the answer provided.

Integrity in Applying for Jobs

Integrity in the job market today has a distinct need. Today there are many jobs posted on the internet on a daily basis. There are a wide variety of positions posted with a wide variety of requirements for those jobs. It is imperative that when you are applying to a specific job announcement that you make sure that you meet the requirements as posted. It is both time consuming and inefficient for companies to process and/or review applications for a job to which the applicant does not meet the minimum qualifications.

Integrity in society today needs to be increased or at least the exposure of the integrity that is present. Applicants who apply for positions must help to provide an effort to increase the amount of integrity in society. This can be accomplished by making sure that you meet the qualifications for the position. This first step in applying for positions is to make sure you qualify. This shows that you have integrity in not applying for a position for which you cannot perform the requirements.

Sometimes the qualification terms can be vague and you are not sure if you meet the criteria. One way to identify if you can perform the requirements of the position is to look at the responsibilities. If you have experience in performing the identified actions chances are that you can perform the duties. Sometimes, however, the minimum requirements such as a degree keep you from applying for the position. It may be difficult to keep from applying but you must respect the conditions imposed for the position.

It is up to the company posting a job announcement to assure that they are not limiting qualified candidates from applying. Many times those who do not have a degree can perform the job as good if not better than those with a degree. A degree is a good thing to have but it does not necessarily mean that you can perform specific tasks of a position simply because you have a degree.
In summary you should only apply for positions for which you qualify as defined in the position description. Sometimes the title of the position may be misleading as to your meeting the requirements. Before applying for a job make sure that you can perform the duties as defined and that you meet the minimum requirements in submitting an application. This will help the company to reduce cost by not having to review applications for people who do not meet the minimum requirements. It will also show that you have integrity in this specific aspect by not applying for a position to which you do not qualify.

Integrity in Eminent Domain Actions

The actions taken by local governments and sometimes state and national governments regarding eminent domain have recently been open to question. There have been court cases which in part have supported the government position and at other times have supported the home owner. Eminent domain in its concept is a good tool which is available for government entities. However there are indications, in some cases, that this tool appears to have been abused. Local and state governments must have the resources to develop and grow in particular areas. However, when making a decision to impose eminent domain for a specific area they must take into consideration the effect on individuals.

Many times people have resided in areas for most if not all of their lives. When a government entity invokes eminent domain this affects people not only physically but also psychologically. This must be taken into consideration. The person (s) or government making the decision must honestly ask themselves a question. How would they feel if they were the person or persons being impacted by the decision?

The decision and the issues involved in invoking eminent domain must have the characteristics of integrity. The people involved in making the decision must also display the characteristics of integrity in how the decision was made. Is there a real need and not a perceived need to invoke eminent domain? Taking a person’s property is a significant event in their lives. The decision should not be taken lightly.

The questions that I feel should be asked are noted below. The answers to the questions must be honest and if eminent domain is invoked it must pass the test for integrity. The decisions must be evaluated against previous court decisions regarding eminent domain which have in some cases reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

Is the action necessary for the public good?
Is the use strictly going to be for public purposes?
Are private individuals or companies going to benefit with regard to building a building for private use?
Is the action necessary to create a safer environment such as the widening of a street to ease traffic flow?
Have all options been considered as to other possible locations that have less impact on individuals.
Are government employees going to benefit from the action being taken?
Has all available information on the facts been reviewed for accuracy and completeness?

The purpose of eminent domain actions taken by municipalities is some cases are not clearly defined and leave unanswered questions as to the actual purpose of the action. Economic development is necessary if an area is to develop and grow. The use of eminent domain can have an affect upon the public opinion of the government entity invoking this power. Sometimes decisions must be made for the public good but they need to be made with honesty and integrity. Governments at all levels in their decisions are subject to the opinion of the public for their actions. Voters who are unhappy with decisions of government entities must make their feelings known. Voters have a right to replace officials if it is felt they have overstepped their authority. This can be legal or moral. I am not a lawyer but the rights of the individual as written in the U.S. Constitution must be protected.

Integrity in Restaurant Service

Service by restaurants and integrity is a concept that we usually do not bring together. Integrity does play a part in the service we receive or not receive in the service we get when we go to a restaurant. Service involves both the issues of getting our order correct and the service we receive from the waitress/waiter.

Service of the waitress or waiter is a key ingredient in whether we are a satisfied customer. Satisfied customers return to places where the service and the food are good. Integrity in restaurant service by a waitress/waiter involves several things. The main point to address is that attention to the customer is critical. People do not like to be shown to their seats and then ignored. They expect to have a person to take their order in a timely manner. When we go to a restaurant we would like to be provided with integrity of service. Integrity of service involves accomplishing the responsibilities in serving the customers. Some of the elements involved are listed below.

Take the order in a timely manner.
Check to make sure the customer (s) do not need drink refills.
Make sure the order is correct before setting it on the table.
Take the dishes when the customer (s) is finished.
Ask the customer (s) if they want dessert.
Check to see if the customer (s) needs anything else.
Write the order down correctly.
Not forgetting part of the order when delivering.

Part of the service in a restaurant involves the preparing the order. The integrity and service of the chef involves making sure the order is prepared as requested on the ticket. There are times that I have had to send food back as it was not prepared correctly. I like my food cooked well-done and I will return it until it is done as I requested. There are times when it comes back correctly the second time but there are times that it takes 3 or more times to get it right. A customer who experiences this is not apt to return in the future as a repeat customer. It is important for chefs to make sure the orders they receive is prepared as the customer requested.

Many times I have been in restaurants and have received excellent service and there are times when the service has been lacking. When I do not receive good service I usually do not leave a tip or if I do it is a small one. This is to send a single that I was not happy with the service I received. Sometimes if the service is bad enough, I let the cashier and/or the manager know of my experience.

If we receive good food/service we as individuals should tip our waitress/waiter to show our appreciation. There are many good waitresses/waiters in restaurants. Those that provide good service should be rewarded; those that do not should not. When we do a great job we like to be recognized so we should apply the same principle to service in a restaurant. Recognize good service when it is received. The people in this profession will appreciate it.

Integrity in Emails

Most everyone who has an email address receives information that in some cases lacks a sense of truth. I have received emails with misleading headlines in the subject. An example would be come get your free gift. When reading the content of the some emails a purchase is required to receive the gift (s). Emails such as these should not be sent as they have a distinct lack of integrity both in the content and the subject line. If an email subject line identifies that you have a free gift, then you should not have to purchase something to receive it. There are other cases where all that is required is to sign up for a newsletter. I find this not to be a problem in many cases but it too should not be a requirement.

I must say that there are many legitimate emails that are sent on a daily basis. One example is receiving emails from newsletters or internet organizations to which you belong. Any email that disguises the true content or purpose in the subject, in my opinion, lacks integrity. In my emails I have a reason for contacting an organization or individual. When we send emails we feel that they have a legitimate purpose. We must examine the purpose of each of our emails so that it will violate spam conditions. Below are some valid reasons for sending an email that I have collected. However it is not meant to be all inclusive. It is only meant to provide examples. The list also contains references to truth in the subject line.

Reasons

Requesting Information
Questions on site information
Requesting permission to use information (e.g. copyright permission)
Communicating with friends and associates
Providing information on a new product not listed on the site. An example would be a
new book for a site that sells books. .
Using the contact methods identified on the site.
Communicate with employees

Subject Line

Identify the true purpose of the email
Assure purpose is clearly written and truthful.
Subject should agree with content

These may not be all the proper reasons for generating an email but I feel they satisfy a large portion of the requirements for sending emails.

Emails that identify misleading or inaccurate statements in the subject line I tend to delete without opening and in some cases I will block the receipt of future emails from the same source. The exception to this would be newsletters to which I am subscribed. In some cases though, I have discontinued my receipt of newsletters where statements being made in the subject line are misleading. Sometimes these documents display content that do not comply with the principles of integrity or ethics. While there are many city governments that responsibly generate these ordnances, others do not. Local governments must act responsibly to generate legislation through whatever document is necessary to provide for the operation of necessary services that residents expect.

Ordnances or laws dependant upon the term used must be generated with great care and only be initiated to meet governmental needs or the needs expressed or expected by city residents. The subjects must be carefully decided and the requirements must be identified before any document should be created. There should also be a process for the public to comment on any proposed legislation. Some local governments have this option and it is usually part of a regular council meeting. Communication between the residents and their government is important if the people are to have faith in the decisions that are made.

Many times situations occur that force changes to be made. When the changes are decided upon the implementation should be delayed, where possible, to allow community input. Communities are also made up of businesses and any legislation that affects the operations of businesses in the community should be carefully considered. Local governments want an environment in which businesses can flourish and they need to be careful in not generating legislation or requirements that will affect this environment.

This is necessary especially where new requirements are being imposed based on needs identified. Also any governmental document must be written clearly so the public understands them. These requirements must be communicated to the public through monthly meetings, town meetings and/or documents mailed to residents. This communication is necessary for two reasons. The first is to inform the residents of any new or revised changes. The second is to inform the residents of how their elected officials are managing their responsibilities.

City ordnances and policies upon which the government operates must be accomplished through principles of integrity. Integrity today in all levels of government appears to be lacking to some extent. While this statement is not a reflection on all participants or representatives, the perception must change. I know there are people in government that perform their responsibilities under the principles of integrity. This article is not a reflection upon those individuals. People have a right, especially at the local level of government, to have their elected officials make decisions according to principles of integrity.

Many decisions must be made in running a local government. Some decisions involve tax rates to pay for government programs and expenses. Some expenses involve the maintenance of roads and providing snow removal during the winter months. Some cities, depending upon their size, have higher expenses than others and must assure they have the income to support the needs of the residents. It is also important to maintain integrity principles in conducting city council meetings and allow for input from residents into decisions being made or considered.

Integrity in National Legislation

Integrity in the political process is something that needs to be increased. Legislation proposed at the national level needs to meet certain criteria if the legislation is going to be a valuable addition to current laws. Today there is much news about legislation that keeps being added to other bills being processed that are an effort to get legislation for a specific community or state. While this is not necessarily a bad situation, the value of the legislation needs to be examined. These criteria would help to eliminate or reduce wasteful spending and may help to reduce the national debt. Remaining legislation proposed at the national level also needs to be evaluated based on value added conditions and/or whether the requirement is the responsibility of the federal government to provide.

Proposed legislation at the national level should also not be bogged down with devoting time to legislation for old or new programs that add no value. Some examples of programs that are warranted would be to provide funding for items such as Medicare, highway construction and repair, and others that provide funding for mandated federal program requirements. The role of the federal government, in my opinion, is to provide laws and funding where necessary that bring consistency to requirements for all citizens and to support mandated federal programs.

Sometimes states impose requirements differently for various subjects. While this is not necessarily bad, there needs to be some consistency for requirements that apply to all citizens regardless of state of residence. In this situation, the federal government should identify minimum requirements. Many pieces of legislation are meant to give local representatives or senators exposure for doing something for their home district or state. While it is important to the individual (s) involved showing some action, proposing legislation that is not beneficial to the local, state or national level only adds to waste of taxpayer dollars. Spending time on processing legislation that serves no useful purpose is not in the best interest of the community, state or national level. The list of items in the next paragraph are some of the criteria which I feel all proposed national legislation should meet.

The first item is that funding for value added mandated government programs should be provided. A second condition is to renew funding for programs that work and has shown positive results. This is important as we need to keep renew funding for programs that have shown positive results. A third condition involves issues to provide guidance or to bring consistency between states on national issues. The forth criteria should be where there is need to clarify terms in previous laws where requirements have been interpreted differently either within states or the court system. Another requirement is that legislation should not be generated solely for the purpose to bring funding to local districts or states where there is no value added benefit. Legislation should support national government responsibilities. The last requirements are where legislation should provide guidance or funding for value added services which are the responsibility of the federal government.

In summary proposed legislation at the national level should only be generated for necessary federal programs and responsibilities. It should not be to continually support programs that have been shown to be a waste of taxpayer dollars where no positive results can be identified. Sometimes there are exceptions but it should not be the rule. Legislators should look at the economic and value added to all proposed legislation and only devote time to those that are requirements of the national government to provide. National legislation should not impede on any subject which is a state responsibility to provide.

Integrity in Political Mailings

Publications that are generated by supporters of political candidates or the candidates themselves must have accurate, complete and reliable information. Political candidates mail publications for various reasons. Any content that is printed and distributed to their constituents must be reviewed for accuracy and completeness of information. Political candidates and their supporters have a responsibility to provide to their constituents accurate, complete and reliable information.

Sometimes distributed information refers to their opponents in a re-election or election campaign. Information referring to positions on issues should provide some details as to why the position has been made. While all information may not be readily available to the public, an opponent must not use this opportunity to focus on specific issues for which an incumbent may not be able to openly give specifics. Information presented by an opponent focusing on a specific issue provides a disservice to voters. Sometimes an issue is important to voters but the focus should not be on a single issue but all topics important to voters. Focusing on an incumbent’s position on an issue is an attempt, I believe, to take the focus away from qualifications of the person running for office. While this may not always be the case, I do not like this type of tactic and it lowers my opinion of any opponent to an incumbent.

Incumbents have also use the tactic identified in the previous paragraph. Whether it is an incumbent or an opponent, the tactic takes away the focus on qualifications of candidates and their position on issues facing voters. Broad statements made by any candidate must be supported by specific documentation otherwise the statements are merely words with no factual basis. Statements made without supporting information lacks integrity and makes a statement as to the character of the candidate running for office.

Mailings by political candidates should contain accurate and complete information about positions on issues. Sometimes making a statement in publications regarding a position on an issue does not allow for the reasons to be known for the position taken. Sometimes an incumbent in office makes a decision based on information they have available at the time, which may or may not be available to the public. It is important for voters to ask the question of candidates, both incumbents and their opponents, why they take certain positions on issues. This type of activity will help the voter determine who their choice should be when it comes time to vote.

In summary mailings by political candidates should be accurate, complete and reliable. Information that is presented with the purpose of or results in misleading the public provides a disservice to the voters. Political candidates should not use tactics which are aimed at discrediting an incumbent or an opponent of an incumbent where specifics cannot be provided to support decisions made.

Information in mailings should address issues facing voters and candidates positions. Publications should also focus on qualifications and differences between candidates for office, letting the voters decide who is best to fill the position. Making statements that it is time for a change does not qualify as a reason for voters to vote for a candidate running against an opponent. Content of mailings by or for political candidates reflect on the character and integrity of the candidate. We need people who exemplify the characteristics of integrity in office and will make decisions based on all the facts at their disposal even if the position taken is not popular.

Business Ethics Pledge Movement

The world of ethics in the business and the professional environment has constantly been in the news. An effort is currently being made to increase the existence of integrity and ethics in business and organizations. We as individuals are or can be a big part of forcing the business community to operate with integrity in their decisions and the treatment of their customers. This movement needs our help. The movement culminates into a business ethics pledge, which businesses sign to make a commitment to operate their business based on ethical principles. I discovered this organization through reading a book titled Modern Day Heroes: In Defense of America. This is a great book that honors all heroes of society not just the military. The authors of the book are: Pete Mitchell and Bill Perkins.

I signed this pledge as I feel it is important as an individual and a business person to make a commitment to ethics/integrity principles. This commitment was an easy choice for me. I always make sure that work I complete is my best effort and I expect the best effort from others. In dealing with businesses I expect quality products and services and if I do not receive them I take efforts to show my displeasure through available channels. We as individuals must force businesses to operate to the principles outlined in the pledge. This is the only way change will take place.

While there are those businesses which do operate under the principles of this movement there are others that do not. We must require quality products and services or let businesses know that there are other places where you can do business. If I do not receive quality products or services from a company or organization, I stop using that business unless they make an honest effort to change. Commitment must be documented to support statements made. Without documentation there is no evidence of change.

The principles in the pledge are important. I have a web site: http://www.myqualitywriting.com/ on which I have identified my commitment to this movement. There is also links to other articles I have written on the subject of integrity in various elements of society or conditions which exist. Some examples are Integrity in Education, Integrity in Management and Integrity in Auditing. I have also written a book titled Integrity: Do You Have It? 2nd edition, which can be found on several bookstore sites including Amazon.com. A link to the pledge site is noted below. I highly recommend that you access the site and learn about the movement and the commitment businesses make who have signed the pledge. The link is www.business-ethics-pledge.org.

Through the link provided in the previous paragraph you will find the contents of the pledge and links to ethics articles associated with the principles. The tab titled Principled Profit Book will take you to a site that has much information to help the business person see why having integrity and ethics is beneficial. There is also another great source of information. A book titled Principled Profit: Marketing That Puts People First by Shel Horowitz. I have bought this book and it is a great resource for the business community in identifying the positive results of making the pledge commitment.

As examples of my commitment to this pledge I have added a link to the pledge site through my email signature, posted comments on writing forums about the pledge, identified my commitment on my business cards and continually talk about the movement. This article is also another way to communicate information about this important movement. The contents of the pledge are noted below. If you have a desire to make the commitment, please go to the link and sign the pledge. The content of the pledge is:

“I pledge allegiance, in my heart and soul, to the concepts of honesty, integrity, and quality in business. I recognize that the cornerstone of success is treating all stakeholders fairly, with compassion, and with a commitment to service. Working from abundance, I recognize that even my competitors can become important allies. I will not tolerate crooked practices in my business, from co-workers, direct or indirect reports, supervisors, managers, suppliers, or anyone else—and if I encounter such practices, I will refuse to go along with them and report them to appropriate authorities within and outside the company. I pledge to support the "triple bottom line" of environmental, social, and financial responsibility. And I pledge to participate in a serious effort to focus the business community on these principles, by sharing this message with at least 100 other business leaders.”

In society today it is important as individuals and business people to make a commitment to ethical principles. I am tired and I am sure there are many others who are tired of unethical decisions that have been made which impact our way of life. Together we can start a change in the concept and perception of the way businesses deal with their customers. Let’s make a commitment to convey the message that we require to be treated with respect and honesty. This commitment involves honesty from businesses and others. People must perform their responsibilities and not force their work on others. Decisions that are made by us as individuals and as business persons must be based on ethical principles. This includes making sure those products and services with which we have an impact are of the highest quality and perform as advertised.

Integrity in Gas Prices

I support the concept of those companies who process crude oil and/or sell gasoline to consumers to make a profit. There has been much activity with gas prices going up and down on a regular basis. The price of a barrel of oil is constantly changing. What this article is about is the fact that gas prices at service stations are constantly changing. This occurs even when the same supply is in the tanks to be sold. Deliveries do not occur as often as the change in gas prices.

The change in gas prices at gas stations brings into question why the prices are changing so much with the same supply in the tanks. The price of gas should remain the same until a new supply is delivered. The price charged can be calculated based on the amount of gallons left and the number added to the tank. The cost of supply is known for both quantities. If prices were adjusted based on delivery of additional supply, then the prices would be more stable at the pump and, I believe, the public would be less likely to be irritated. At least the price changes would have some degree of logic.

I must state we all like to see gas prices go down for whatever reason but we do not like to see prices go up. The most logical sense would be to have a more stable/consistent price. This would allow the public to better adjust their driving habits where they can. With the constant change they cannot plan in their budget how much they will need for gas to go to work, run errands and other necessary traveling. It has also been stated that the changes in the price of a barrel of oil takes a few months before the supply at the pump is affected. However, when the price goes up on oil, the price at the pump seems to go up at the very report of higher oil prices.

The information in this article, I believe, is something that everyone seems to have an opinion about. We must understand the nature of business to make a profit but when the perception is that business is charging higher prices than what the public feels is normal, the public becomes irritated. Those in the business of processing crude oil for delivery to gas stations must understand that the operation of their business is not well received with the public.

There has also been much information about the fact that there are different requirements for gasoline and environmental concerns from various states. I understand the need to satisfy the needs of individual states to impose environmental requirements. If states would discuss their needs and generate a set formula for content of gasoline production it would ease the process of creating gasoline for the public. This, I believe, would help to reduce cost and possibly reduce the price at the pump. Anytime a common set of criteria for a product is established, it is beneficial to the overall process and efficiency. If the process were to become more efficient then the oil companies would be able to charge less for each gallon sold.

In summary we as individuals can reduce our need for gas if we consolidate trips and walk to those places we can instead of driving. If states were to discuss their needs and generate a consistent formula that could be applied to all states then the possibility exist that gas prices could be reduced. Oil companies need to make a profit to stay in business as all companies do but if the efficiency can be increased the cost would be reduced and a potential reduction of prices at the pump.

Leadership and Integrity

Leadership and integrity are two concepts that are an integral part of each other. To be a true leader and someone who sets an example for others to follow, a person must display and have the characteristics of integrity. A person who leads must do so with setting examples for others. Their actions and character have others who follow them based on their examples. Sometimes we are leaders by example and do not realize that we are an example for others. In our work we can be leaders simply by completing our assigned responsibilities to the best of our ability. This type of commitment can be an example for others.

Leadership as an individual or as a leader of an organization or company must display integrity principles in all decisions and actions that are made. It is important that leaders today display integrity. This must be validated through documented records. A person who displays leadership credentials but has no evidence to support their statements are not real leaders. Leaders are honest, tell the truth and they make the right decision not based on opinion but on a complete set of facts as they know them. Sometimes that decision may not be popular but a true leader does the right thing whether or not it is supported by an organization or company to which they are associated. If a leader makes a mistake as identified through additional information, then he/she must take steps to correct the error and give the reason (s) for the change in position.

Leaders set good examples for others and by their actions others will follow. This affect sometimes occurs without realizing the effect. Integrity principles must be instilled in the fabric of our economy. True leaders must have integrity in all phases of their lives, both personal and business. We as individuals must make an effort to change the perception and actions as identified in news stories of the lack of integrity in business and government operations. I believe there are people in business and government that have integrity and make the right decisions even though they may be unpopular. If you make a statement or commitment, and it must be moral and legal, then we loose credibility if we do not complete the action or documentation does not support the statement.

Credibility is important in society today and can be the difference between success and failure in our daily activities. Again today we have seen and continue to see many instances where various leaders, both government and in the private sector have failed in the performance of their duties. If the mechanics of leadership in society is going to change we as individuals must take action to require that change take place. While we are only one individual, if enough individuals take a stand to instill integrity within society then if others do so society will begin to change. People have a right to have leaders in business and government to have integrity in their performance of their responsibilities.

We are all capable of being leaders. We have the capability of leading by example and instilling the qualities of integrity in our actions. We as parents are in essence leaders for our children. If we want our children to succeed and be future leaders of society, we must be leaders for them and be examples that we would want them to follow. Are we going to make mistakes? The answer is yes. The key is to show our children that we can learn from our mistakes and help them to avoid the mistakes we have made. If we are true leaders in our parent responsibilities, then our children will be examples for others and society which will increase their chances for success.

Integrity in Revising Ethics/Integrity Rules

There have been several recent articles and discussions involving revision of ethics /principles in place for various organizations, private and government. Ethics rules if written correctly should have little reason to be revised. The key to many ethics/integrity rules is to keep them constant so everyone knows and understands them. It is important to generate rules with clear direction and guidelines without the possibility of various interpretations. However, there are always going to be those who want to interpret to fit their needs. This is wrong.

Ethics/integrity principles should be written in clear language which would help to prevent different interpretations from the rules. However, there are reasons why these rules could be revised. One of these involves the need to clarify the language written in either the original version or an updated version that has had different meanings not originally recognized. Another is the result of incidents that are unacceptable to the public and/or the ethics committee tasks to keeping integrity principles within an organization or government entity.

Ethics/integrity principles should be reviewed periodically to keep the rules up to date for current acceptable conditions. Over time things that were once acceptable may now be unacceptable. In the same aspect things that were once unacceptable may now be acceptable. The people affected by ethics rules in place deserve the rules to be followed.

Many organizations have ethics/integrity principles identified in their mission or operation policies. I applaud those that have them as a way of identifying to their customers or constituents their policy with regard to ethics/integrity principles. It is important to have specific guidelines that are not open to interpretation. Again, it is also important to not have the guidelines so cumbersome that it is difficult to understand the rules for those required to follow them. It is also important for those watching those who are to obey the rules to understand them and have the capability to make a decision on any possible violation by those required to follow them.

In summary ethics/integrity principles are an important factor in identifying the principles in place for business and government organizations. Ethics/integrity principles should be properly written to avoid different interpretations of the rules. These rules should be reviewed periodically for any needed update to address conditions that were not originally identified in the current version. This can be caused by situations that surface where problems are identified where conditions are clearly unacceptable to the public but not identified as a violation of the principles in place. These kinds of issues should be addressed and added to any revisions as deemed necessary by the ethics committee.

Permission to Think

I recently read a blog from another writer titled I Give You Permission. The blog was by Matthew Moran. This blog article brings to the surface many things that I feel have occurred in many places within society. We sometimes limit ourselves waiting for opportunities which slowly surface or not at all. There are also times when opportunities arise and we are reluctant to make a decision. Our society and the environment in which we work in part sometimes generate this.

Unions, in some cases, stress that we should not do anything outside of our assigned responsibilities. This condition, I feel, is usually to protect the worker from the management of a company trying to get work done at less cost. While this may be good for the company it does not provide benefits for the worker as they are performing duties totally outside of their responsibilities. There is another side in that we as workers can provide our own opportunities for advancement if we volunteer to do something outside the scope of our job. This provides evidence that we can do other functions that we may not otherwise be recognized as qualified to perform. This can provide an opportunity for applying for future job openings. This will only work if we receive the credit for the functions we performed outside our assigned duties. The remainder of this article will identify various aspects of the I give you permission article with my input and examples for each area identified.

I give you permission to create opportunity

We can create our own opportunities. Many people look in newspapers or online for job openings that they are qualified to perform. This limits our opportunities. We have the capability of creating our own opportunities. If we have what we feel are the qualifications to perform specific tasks but are not recognized as qualified, we should contact the source advertising the position and let them know why we feel we are qualified for the job. This opens avenues to the hiring facility and us as individuals by not limiting our search for those positions where there is a clear connection between our work/experience history and the position (s) being advertised.
We can create or recognize other opportunities by what appears to be a lack of integrity in business and products. People want to do business with organizations that are committed to integrity principles and they want products that are of high quality and function as advertised. If we can provide these conditions through our business/web site, then we open an avenue that may not otherwise present itself.

I give you permission to request and take on projects and responsibility outside of your direct training or job description.

This aspect identifies conditions to increase our expertise on any subject to which we feel has a need. In a past position there was a need to understand a specific process. As a result I researched and looked at procedures and requirements and became familiar with the process. I became a recognized expert for the process as I took the initiative to learn as much as I could through research and asking questions. It became one of my recognized quality/experiences that otherwise may not have taken place without my initiative to learn new things. We must all not be afraid of learning new processes or technology as we never know where it will take us in the future or the opportunities that may open as a result.

I give you permission to learn new technologies quickly and turn them into tools in your arsenal within 2-3 months of learning them.

In the preceding paragraph I mention about taking an initiative to learn new processes or technologies. Taking this aspect further we can create new opportunities by creating technologies that are needed to fill a need. Many things were designed as a result of the need to advance our space exploration. New products and techniques were needed to successfully accomplish our landing on the moon. As a by product new products became available that may not otherwise been accomplished. We can also use the new technologies and/or processes we learn to make a positive impact on our business or company with which we are connected.

I give you permission to yield the rewards of unyielding, proactive, optimism.

This aspect involves having a positive attitude. We should restrict ourselves from drawing a conclusion that something will not work. While having a positive attitude will not reduce the amount of work involved but committing to an idea and researching and making it work is what this country is all about. Many people take ideas and work with the process to finalize a new technique, product or service. This not only creates an opportunity but enhances our experience and may provide other opportunities in the future that are not known at the time. If you are interested in reading the article by Matthew Moran here is the link: http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/pm/career/archives/i-give-you-permission-8488 The article was posted 3/28/2006.

If you are interested or have a skill which will benefit other companies or organizations in your area the article suggest contacting them directly and not waiting for a job announcement. This creates an opportunity and establishes your creditability. In business we seek opportunities to succeed but we must make our opportunities by researching available options within the scope of our business. There are many instances which are overlooked where opportunities exist for various marketing methods but there are also opportunities for us to develop our business profile by establishing an opportunity.

Integrity in Voting on Amendments to Legislation

The practice of legislatures both state and federal of blocking votes on amendments to bills before the House of Representatives or Senate is a practice that should make voters angry. The representatives or senators have the right to have their amendments placed before the full Senate or House of Representatives. Denying proposed amendments does not allow the process to work for all the constituents of the applicable senator or representative. Granted there are times when the submitting amendments to bills being generated is an attempt to water down the original proposed bill.

Perception and Integrity

Today the subject of integrity is constantly in the news. Words used to describe news events provide a perception to the public and sometimes the words used do not match the facts when all is said and done. Perception is involved in every evaluation of an individual, company or organization. When a person makes statements the perception can be that he is for or against a specific issue or has certain principles. However, actions and documentation to support the statements made must accompany the words. Initial perceptions can be deceiving and may not be based on facts but sometimes this is intentional. Companies want to project certain images to the public and make statements that may be in agreement with public opinion. However the perception we see must be matched by documentation for us to retain the perception generated.

People who give the perception of having integrity in their words may in some instances be giving a false impression. One example is where people many times want to give a positive perception of being good and honest when the facts state otherwise. If actions do not match the words, the perception is that they did not mean what they said. This provides an opinion or perception that they cannot be trusted. This affects people as individuals and it affects the organizations to which they are a part. Companies do not want to give the perception that their words are meaningless but sometimes this occurs if the wrong perception is generated through actions of their employees and management.

There are many examples, which are in the news where people are investigated for violation of the ethics principles they are to follow. Sometimes the investigation concludes that no violation existed. The perception caused the investigation to be initiated as the conditions gave the appearance or perception that a violation had occurred. It is also important to note that perception can be or is a key point in the opinion others have of us as individuals and the organizations to which we are a part.

In operating a business the public perception of the products or services a business has can or will affect the profit or loss of the company. Companies and individuals within them must take actions to publicize what you or your organization is about so current and potential customers may form the correct opinion. The key again is that any statements made must be met with action by management and employees.

The perception of a company can be created or impacted by coverage of company decisions in the news. If all the facts are not presented the public opinion of the company or individual will be affected. We as individuals also form opinions of companies and individuals based on our interaction with them. With regard to personal experiences our opinion can be impacted on how we are treated by a member of an organization or company. If we receive bad service or have a bad experience with a product, our opinion or perception of a company or individual will be negative. This usually translates into finding other resources for the product or service provided.

People want to be treated fairly when dealing with individuals and organizations. At the same time we want to project that we are responsive to doing business with organizations that respect their customers. If we feel we are treated fairly and that the business operates in an environment of integrity, we are more likely to continue to do business with them. The right perception is important as the public will make decisions based on the perception the company or organization transmits.

Politicians regularly try to project that they are looking out for the public good. Perception affects us all by the way we talk and the actions we take. This again is how opinions are formed of us as individuals. We must remember to match our words with our actions and thus provide a positive perception.

Making Decisions Based on Public Poll Surveys

There is much activity relating to polls on various topics of interest generated on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. The outcome and accuracy of polls is dependent upon honest and random participation of chosen participants. Many times the outcome of polls taken may not or will not be reflective of the actual public position. Those who take polls in some cases want to project a specific outcome. This can be for a variety of reasons. If a poll is taken of democrats and republicans on an issue the outcome may or will be different based on part affiliation. Polls taken must be reliable in that the participants should be randomly selected to provide a cross section of the public and their opinion on the issues. The results must be verified to some extent to be reliable. Exit polls taken during elections may not or have not been reflective of the outcome for a specific state. The reason can be due to the sample taken or the actual response of the participants.

Some politicians and this does not mean all politicians, regularly look at poll numbers make decisions based upon what they perceive is the public viewpoint on given topics. This is occurring since the politicians, especially those running for re-election want to be on the side of the public so they will be re-elected. This is wrong. Politicians should base their decisions on the issue at hand not on the public approval or disapproval for a given legislative action. The merits of proposed legislation should be evaluated and then a decision made based on the value and benefit to their constituents and/or the country. The news media regularly present polls on the issues. This is only of value if the polls are randomly taken and not skewed to present a specific viewpoint as with the position of the media taking the poll. This does not imply that polls taken by all organizations are skewed. However, the outcome can be determined based on the population used.

All politicians local, state and federal and even the President should not make decisions based on polls taken by any organization. Decisions should made be based upon the merits of the issue and what it is felt to be the right decision to make. Sometimes decisions need to be made that are unpopular but they need to be made. Making decisions based on the outcome of polls does not say much for the integrity of the decisions that are made. Politicians must have enough integrity to make decisions not based on polls or party position but on the merits of the issue. They need to make decisions that are right for their constituents and/or the country. If we start making decisions or in some cases continue to make decisions based on the opinions of others we affect the value and integrity of the decisions we make.

American Heroes

I read a book titled American Heroes: In Defense of America. This is a great book. We tend to think of American heroes as those individuals that are part of our military forces. American heroes can be anyone. They can be your neighbors, friends and anyone with which you interact. A hero is someone that helps to change or impacts the lives of others through their action (s). Sometimes being a hero involves risking your life such as a policeman, fireman or military person. It can also be helping others get out of the way of a dangerous situation. We need to be thankful to any profession or person that helps protect the rest of us. Many times there are those who are critical of professions for situations that occur. They focus on the bad results and try to inflame the situation. This does not mean that situations should be ignored but people need to have an open mind, as there are always two sides to a story. Sometimes things cannot be avoided while other times people involved with professions to protect us do not react, as they should. People make mistakes and the profession and the people in it should not be labeled when situations arise.

People in professions that provide services involving serving the community or our country are typically, I believe, good, honest people who do their jobs to the best of their ability. Professions such as fireman, policeman and those in the military are only a few of the many professions that support our communities and our country. Often times their lives may be hard relating to the requirements of their job but they have a commitment to serve. We should honor that commitment and service on a daily basis. They are heroes in the true sense as their action impact the lives of the people around them and their country.

Decisions are sometimes made that put others in harms way but we should support the people that carry out those decisions. An example is our military. We should support the many people serving in our military and their families in the sacrifices they make every day. The decision to go to war should not affect our support. They are serving to protect us from harm. Even without a war their local communities and the nation should support all our military and their families.

Another example of a hero can be a dad for a son or daughter. Parents who support their children and try their best to be examples for them to follow are heroes. When we have principles that are a reflection of who we are and we stand by them we can be heroes to others that we may not even know. Heroes change or impact the lives of others in serving their community or country. If you would like more examples of who are American heroes I highly recommend that you check out this link: (www.ModernDayHeroes.com/pete). On this site it indicates that this book (Modern Day Heroes: In Defense of America) will be given to those in the military who would like a copy. Making the decision to buy this book and supporting our troops by paying for a copy for the people on this list would be one way of showing our appreciation.

Integrity of Teachers

The integrity of teachers has a great impact on the quality and content of classes they teach. There are many teachers that take their job seriously in our education system. They feel they are an important piece to educating the leaders of tomorrow. However, there are those who are just there for the pay and do not make any effort to go the extra mile. If our society is to have the leaders it needs for the future our educational system must provide those who take the profession of teaching seriously. Teachers are not limited to our school system but also those who teach within companies or organizations. Those who take great care and effort in the education process need to be rewarded and recognized. Criteria should be established to recognize those teachers who actually exhibit enthusiasm in their teaching efforts. There are many good teachers but sometimes the system involved does not provide the resources to enhance the content of courses taught at all levels.

Part of having integrity in teaching a class teachers must have the qualifications and/or experience to teach. There are times when teachers are administering classes for which they have no degree or knowledge in the subject. This is evidenced by statistics that is available on the Department of Education web site. I have also written an article titled Integrity in Education which can be accessed at www.myqualitywriting.com/MyArticles.html. Classes that are taught in companies or organizations are also important to be assured that the best instructor is provided for the class. A person who has taken a class does not make them qualified to teach. They may have the knowledge of the subject but not the capability to put that knowledge to work in teaching others. There are those who have a gift or enjoy the educational process and can translate a subject to a classroom environment. These people should be utilized at all levels in all organizations. This concept applies not only to the private sector but also the public sector. Using these resources will help to enhance the quality and integrity of the education of tomorrow’s leaders.

Those who take the profession of teaching must have integrity for the subjects they teach. They must make sure that all applicable information is provided to their students. They should have the resources at their disposal to make this a reality. Teaching any subject involves not limiting the content to provide complete and accurate information for the students to learn. If a teacher does not possess the knowledge or experience for a subject they are assigned to teach, they should respectfully refuse to teach it. I have a high regard for teachers and they should not be forced to teach subjects that their degrees or experiences do not provide adequate resources.
Teachers must also provide a connection from the classroom to the application of the subject to society. This is important to show the students the applicability of the subject when they enter the job market. This will not only enhance the quality of the learning process for the subject but will increase active participation of the students in the class.

To summarize integrity of teachers at all levels is important and must be emphasized by not only the teachers but also those responsible for the quality and integrity of the courses being taught. Administrators, school boards and anyone responsible for course content must assure that a quality education/training is achieved. They need to take the measures available to them to assure the most qualified people are teaching the applicable subjects. Sometimes this may involve allowing those without degrees to teach specific aspects of a subject to connect their experiences to the classroom.

Using Information Contained in Court Documents Filed

Today there seems to be a practice of broadcasting information about the content of court documents. Filing of court documents is not an indication that the case being presented will result in a decision for the prosecution. Many cases are brought forth when enough information is available to indicate an investigation is needed. Sometimes this requires a formal court process to make a decision on the guilty or innocence of the defendant (s). There have been cases where it appears that information is being used to discredit or affect the integrity or reputation of government or private officials. This practice results in trying the person within the broadcast community and therefore results in a public opinion. This occurs even before a final decision is made within the court system. This method is wrong where it does not present both sides of the issue. There also appears to be cases where people are up for re-election and a court case would help their chances of re-election.

Content of court documents are only pieces of paper presented to bring forth a case for suspected crimes and does not necessarily provide validated information. Media organizations must be careful to not use information within court documents that could impede a fair and just trial, which is required by our constitution. Many cases are brought forth based on testimony of individuals and sometimes documents, which must be validated.

All media organizations have the right to cover any news story that has an impact locally or nationally. However, this right should not be abused by the practices of giving an impression that the information in court documents has already been validated to be true. The media must qualify the information being presented, and some do that the information must be validated through the court proceedings. It is up to the court and/or jury to determine the validity of the documents filed to substantiate cases filed. Yet when a case is filed, especially a high profile case, there is a practice of using the content of documents filed to present the information to the public.

Scare Tactics in Election Campaigns

In this an election year and the battle for political or local election issues I am tired of political candidates, school boards or anyone else who uses scare tactics for election purposes. Many schools use tactics to scare the people in their district to pass bond issues for increases in funding. Many times they make statements that without the tax increase services would be reduced. Some examples are extracurricular activities and school busing. The problem that I have seen or heard is the school board does not efficiently manage their funds. Many times the employment base is more than required to provide the needed quality services for our schools. I have also found or heard that spending is not being properly prioritized. Spending the tax money they receive should be allocated to improve the value of education students receive. To maintain activities and employment levels that do not impact the quality of educational services being provided, school boards must ask for increase in funds. Sometimes it is a matter of increase cost based on proper salary raises associated with increased cost of living. However, these increases could be reduced if the schools properly manage the funds they receive.

In political campaigns, which include local, state and federal elections political candidates use scare tactics to convince voters to vote for them. They make statements that the incumbents make decisions that are inappropriate for their constituents. Making these statements usually does not include the reasons for the decisions being made or what they would do given the same information to make the decisions. Many times issues that are decided by government officials are not popular but they must be made. We may not like the decisions but many times they are in our best interest. Candidates running for office who are trying to unseat a government official use scare and in so doing are I believe, are showing disrespect for the intelligence of voters.

Voters for the most part are intelligent and can make good decisions if given accurate information. When candidates for any office use scare tactics to win votes I tend to vote for their opponents as they are not talking about the issues but only making efforts to discredit their opponents. This is wrong. A voter needs to make decisions not based on scare tactics but the qualifications and records of the persons running for office. Understand a candidate’s position on the issues and vote for those who support your position. Voters deserve to hear candidates talk about the issues that are important to them not making statements trying to discredit their opponents.

Integrity of Candidates in Political Campaigns

I am tired of political campaigns that do not talk about the issues facing voters. Today it seems that the only thing most political candidates for office want to talk about is how their opponent (s) have made decisions that are bad for their constituents. These statements are often made without any specific details. When this occurs the statements are often unverifiable and should be ignored. When a political candidate or anyone else makes a statement that cannot be verified, the statement carries no weight or truth in the content. Some methods a candidate may suggest to verify are to review the records of the senator or representative or government official. These are usually available on the Internet through government web sites.

Making statements that cannot be validated are not worth the time taken to make them or the expense to publish them in newspapers or on the Internet. Sometimes statements made by candidates are factual but the information to support them may not be available for verification purposes to the general public. Candidates usually know this and make statements to discredit their opponents. They know that the information to support decisions may not be available to the public without causing security concerns. Many times people try to focus on issues about their opponents to take the focus away from their qualifications or the lack of them.

Candidates who use this kind of tactic should be ignored. Using this tactic may also be an attempt to bring more exposure to them but the tactic backfires as for as I am concerned. It shows a lack of knowledge and respect for the voters. This tactic is used regardless of party affiliation and the response to it should be the same. Candidates must focus on the issues by identifying their position and the position of their opponent (s). This helps to identify the differences between them to allow the voters to make a comparison between them. Another aspect of integrity in the political campaign is candidates many times never answer the question directly and try to provide a vague reply. Sometimes this is necessary dependant upon the subject of the question. Documentation is the key to determining the validity of information transmitted and answers received. This may be by any method whether it is newspapers, television, radio or the Internet. These types of resources do qualify as documentation only if specific sources for the information is identified such as hard records not words by others.

There are many instances where an incumbent in office makes decisions, which we feel are bad but if we had access to the information they use to make those decisions, we may feel differently. Candidates running for office trying to unseat an incumbent know this and try to use this to their advantage. This is wrong. Making statements, which cannot be verified through public information, to support decisions, should be ignored.

To summarize, voters want to hear candidate’s position on the issues not efforts to place their opponents in an unfavorable perspective. When this occurs it takes away from the issues and forces some candidates to respond to allegations. Most candidates would or should discuss the issues that are important to voters. They should not have to spend time responding to allegations made by their opponents. The above information applies to local, state and federal office holders and is not restricted to senators and representatives.

Job Qualifications

Today there are many job listings requiring a person have a degree for job qualification. This may be needed in some situations but not having a degree should not disqualify you from applying for a position. There are numerous people, I believe, that are qualified to fill jobs that are now listed on the Internet and in newspapers but never get the chance. Having a degree does not automatically mean that you can perform the required functions of specific positions. It is also a true statement that not having a degree does not mean that you can not perform the required functions. There are those who self-teach themselves on various subjects. I feel that there needs to be a mechanism that would benefit both the prospective employee and the employer.

Employers should not automatically disqualify job applicants simply for the reason they have no degree. I myself have experience in a variety of subjects through work and training that qualifies me for specific jobs. Sometimes in our work we are placed in positions to perform functions that have never been accomplished. This type of experience, which is not associated with a degree, does not mean we are any less qualified for performing specific tasks. I am also self taught through reading books and accessing web sites for various topics. The sites provide the tools to understand various processes and allow you to learn by doing various functions. Learning by doing a function is the best way to learn. Reading a book or taking a class helps to give you information but you must put it into practice. I have also met people who have degrees but they do not have the common sense necessary to perform common work functions. Again experience and evidence

One mechanism that should be employed is allowing proof of experience for specific job requirements. There are organizations that provide testing to validate people can perform specific functions, which qualifies them for specific jobs. Another avenue is for the applicant to provide documentation of performing specific functions either through documentation of taking specific classes such as those giving certifications or examples of work performed. There are other methods to prove you can perform specific tasks. Sometimes this can be documented in letters of reference from friends that you have worked with or can substantiate your qualifications. When job openings are placed on web sites or in newspapers, the employers should allow this kind of qualifications to be used to apply for the position (s). All these avenues of proof should be available to substantiate your experience and qualifications.

There are some positions that are advertised that allow either a degree or work experience in applying for positions. Companies that use this kind of qualifications will, I believe, receive applications from individuals that may not otherwise have qualified to apply. If companies block out certain avenues for applicants, they will never know if they have received an application from the most qualified individual (s).

I welcome comments regarding this position in announcements for positions. Companies should allow people to apply without restrictions that block qualified applicants from applying. When companies do this they will have a better chance to receive applications form the most qualified, available people.

Qualifications of Teachers

There are many good teachers that are now teaching in our schools today but there are also many others that are not given the recognition to teach. These people are those that have certain skills that they have acquired through work experience, training or learning by performing certain procedures or functions. These people do not have degrees and in some instances do not have certificates. Many employers train people in their organization to train others for a specific subject or program. This does not mean that they are not qualified to teach but our present educational system does not recognize them. Degrees are a wonderful thing and it has been a good practice in the past to require those who teach to have degrees or certification from their respective states. Degrees do not make people a good teacher. It is also true that not having a degree does not mean that people are not qualified to teach.

As stated above, many states and schools require people who teach to have degrees. This requirement is an effort to assure that certain credentials are accomplished. However, there are those who teach outside of their element as defined in statistics with the Department of Education. Teaching out of your element means teaching subjects that you are not certified to teach. Sometimes schools have a need for a teacher in a specific class but does not have anyone trained in the subject. In this respect they assign another to teach. Many times the person tries their best but not having training for the subject can and does impact the learning capabilities of the students taking the class. Information regarding the latest statistics can be found on the Department of Education web site

Having a teaching degree does not mean that you are or are not a good teacher. Many people receive training and certifications and are knowledgeable about a subject but do not have the capability to teach. It takes people with certain skills to teach others. It is also true that there are those who possess the knowledge, skills and willingness to teach but are denied this privilege. I consider teaching others a privilege and many teachers feel the same. This can be evidenced by the recognition of teachers by various organizations for those that put much effort in assuring their students receive proper instruction.

People who have experience from work in specific functions and training received can qualify to teach certain subjects. Our educational system would have increased integrity if schools and universities would allow others who can demonstrate they have the ability and expertise to teach specific subjects. This can be associated with a specific element of a standard subject. An example would be where a person could be a guest teacher. This aspect would bring a connection between society and the school. This connection is important. Students must understand the connection between the classroom and the workforce they are about to enter. This can or may cause extra effort by students in realizing how the subject will benefit them in the workforce. Allowing people to add their experiences from their work functions can greatly increase this connection.

Courses taught through our educational system must be able to relate the subjects to a real workforce environment. If this is not accomplished with a degreed teacher, and I am not saying that it cannot, then the system needs to allow this mechanism. I have a published article on integrity in education, which addresses to some extent qualifications of teachers. This article which is in two (2) parts can be accessed on my web site www.myqualitywriting.com/MyArticles.html. I also have a published book titled Integrity: Do You Have It? 2nd edition, which has a chapter on Integrity in Education. It identifies the statistics from the Department of Education relating to out-of-field teachers. The ISBN of my book is 0741429160 and can be purchased from Infinity Publishing or sites such as amazon.com, Borders.com and Joseph-Beth.com

Integrity Today

Integrity is an important subject that is constantly in the news. It seems that there is always news items where people have been exposed, forced to resign or have been or being prosecuted for violating laws and rules of ethics and integrity. People in the United States and for that matter all over the world must take action to inform other individuals, organizations and companies that lack of integrity will not be tolerated. We as individuals must make an effort to instill integrity in everything we do in our responsibilities on the job and in our personal lives. Our responsibilities as an employee are to show up on time for work and perform our duties to the best of our ability. Employers have a responsibility to provide the proper training and guidance giving us the ability to perform our assigned responsibilities. Management in organizations should not blame individuals for poor performance if this is not accomplished. Integrity in the past, I believe, has been overlooked and has not received the recognition it deserves. Politics is one place that appears to constantly have news stories about integrity issues for politicians.

We as customers and business people must require ourselves to perform with integrity and require businesses and organizations to operate with integrity. This involves requiring companies to live up to their guarantees and adhere to their company policies, especially if they involve integrity principles. If we as individuals want integrity in others, then we must project to others that this quality is important as displayed in our words followed by actions. Statements made by people must be followed by actions. Statements and actions must have evidence of a commitment to integrity principles.

Integrity is also something that should be evaluated on a level playing field by applying the same criteria to everyone. I have become tired of examples that are constantly in the news where individuals or companies have not displayed integrity. When I deal with a company that does not treat their customers with integrity and respect, I sever my relationship with them. If upon registering a complaint, however a company or organization makes changes toward integrity and respect, I will not sever my relationship. Requirements to make companies and organizations to follow their principles are something that all of us need to do when we receive poor service and/or products. The more people demand integrity from businesses and individuals the more businesses will change. Customers of organizations, companies and even constituents of political representatives deserve integrity and accountability in all aspects. People who want change as I do must do something to make the change happen. Change will not happen by itself and we must take action to make change happen. Examples of what actions I have taken are discussed in the subsequent paragraphs. If you as an individual want to change the way businesses operate, I urge you to read the content of the remaining paragraphs and join me in the effort to change the scope of business in society.

As a businessperson I have taken two specific steps to help achieve a change in the way people and businesses operate. The first step was to make a commitment to treat my customers with respect, honesty and integrity. Evidence of this commitment is noted on my web site and through email signatures regarding the signing of a business ethics pledge. There is a movement in place regarding companies committing to integrity principles. The movement has a site http://www.business-ethics-pledge.org, which provides a wide range of subjects and suggestions to spread the movement. Details of the pledge can be found on this site and a list of those committed to the principles. There is also a book by Shel Horowitz that I highly recommend titled Principled Profit: Marketing That Puts People First. It is great and helps to identify things that businesses and individuals can do to change and how it benefits their bottom line.

The second action I have taken is the writing of my book titled Integrity: Do You Have It? 2nd edition. Infinity Publishing publishes the print version of this book. An ebook version is available at http://www.booklocker.com/books/2118.html with an excerpt available to review before purchasing. This book provides the definition and discusses the characteristics of integrity. The characteristics of integrity are the same for all individuals, companies and organizations. It makes sense that we evaluate others and us on the same level. This allows comparisons to be made of people, businesses, and organizations as to whether integrity exists and to what extent.
Some examples of information in the book include the following:

Help to evaluate you on the existence of integrity.

Learn to use the criteria and suggestions in car repair services.

Evaluate the actions of political representatives, local, state and federal for existence of integrity.

Evaluate the coverage of news reported in newspapers, TV and the Internet.

Evaluate the content and reliability of information on Internet Sites.

Learn information about codes of ethics established in various segments to help people require businesses live up to their commitment.

Both versions of my book present the definition of integrity so all readers understand the concept. When this is accomplished the characteristics are then applied to various segments discussed in the book with individual chapters on each. Examples of segments discussed include integrity in the news, integrity in politics and integrity in education among others. Discussing and presenting information on the various segments helps the public to know what commitments have been made or are required. This knowledge helps to provide the tools to make companies or organizations aware that we expect them to follow their established principles.

The book also brings the subject of integrity down to the individual level rather than the corporate level to which we are familiar. One aspect to note is that there needs to be compassion in the reporting of news events for the people involved in the story. The book also helps to bring about the realization of how these segments impact society and the way we live and work when integrity does not exist and when it does. Actions by others always impact decisions we make and we must make sure that any actions or decisions made are accomplished with integrity.

The items identified above as reasons to buy the print or the electronic version and the commitment to a business ethics pledge will help to change the way society operates. If you feel after reading this blog and/or the articles that you want to be a part of efforts to increase integrity in society, then I urge you to sign the business ethics pledge at the link provided. My book, I believe, also will help provide information to ask the right questions of society and/or individuals in assuring integrity exist in all areas with which we have contact.

There are various policies that businesses try to present that they have integrity in their business operations. Is the hype true or an effort to get the public, their customers, to do business with them? I have also written several published articles on the concept of integrity such as Integrity in Management, Integrity in Education and Integrity in Auditing. These are free articles and may be found on my web site http://myqualitywriting.com/MyArticles.html. I feel that integrity in these areas, which are applicable in every segment of society, is important. Other articles on integrity that can also be found at this link include Integrity in Election Ballots and Integrity and Free Speech.

If after reading this blog and/or the articles mentioned you would like to purchase either version, please use the following links:

For the print version you can visit www.infinitypublishing.com go to the bottom of the page and click on bookstore. You can then input the following ISBN: 0-7414-2916-0 to get access to the place to purchase the print version of the book. The print version of the book is also available on www.amazon.com or www.borders.com and other bookstore sites. If you are interested in the electronic version please go to the following link: http://www.booklocker.com/books/2118.html. Both the ebook and the print version are the same even though the titles are different.
